Mars Finance reports that on April 13, the Hong Kong police “Guardian” platform disclosed that in the past week, there was a single online romance scam resulting in a loss of over 2 million Hong Kong dollars.
It is reported that the scammer actively followed a fifty-something female victim on Instagram, initiated contact through comments on her posts, quickly established a romantic relationship, and then claimed to be a “cryptocurrency investment expert,” using the promise of “guaranteed profit” to carry out the scam.
The fraudster first asked the victim to transfer 40,000 HKD as “account opening fee,” then lured her to carry cash in seven installments to an physical exchange store to convert to USDT, and transferred the funds to the scammer’s account via electronic wallet.
After obtaining the funds, the scammer immediately “disappeared” and cut off contact.
The police remind citizens to be vigilant when online dating, and if the other party claims to be an investment expert and requests a transfer for any reason, they should stop immediately and think calmly.
