Xinhua News Agency Brasília, March 13 (Reporter Wu Hao) - Brazilian President Lula announced on the 13th the revocation of the visa for Darren Betti, an advisor on Brazilian affairs to U.S. President Trump, in response to previous U.S. visa restrictions on Brazilian Minister of Health Alexandre Padilha and his family.

In September last year, the Brazilian Ministry of Health issued a statement protesting the U.S. government’s visa restrictions that prevented Padilha from attending the Pan American Health Organization meeting in the U.S., and announced that Padilha canceled his visit to the U.S. Lula said at an event in Rio de Janeiro on March 13 that Betti can only enter Brazil after Padilha is able to travel to the U.S. normally.

Betti had planned to visit Brazil next week, during which he would visit former Brazilian President Bolsonaro, who is currently incarcerated. Previously, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes approved Betti’s visit to Bolsonaro on the 18th. Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira later submitted an opinion to the Supreme Court, stating that a foreign government official visiting a former president during an election year could constitute improper interference in Brazil’s internal affairs. On the 12th, de Moraes revoked the visitation permit.

According to Brazilian media reports, Betti concealed his visit to Bolsonaro when applying for the visa. A statement released by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 13th pointed out that Betti concealed the purpose of his visit when applying for the visa, which is sufficient grounds for denial.

According to the schedule announced by the Brazilian Superior Electoral Court, Brazil will hold the first round of presidential elections on October 4 this year, with a second round scheduled for October 25.

Bolsonaro faces criminal charges for allegedly attempting to instigate a coup after losing the 2022 presidential election. On September 11, 2025, the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court declared Bolsonaro guilty of planning a coup and sentenced him to 27 years and 3 months in prison. Bolsonaro began serving his sentence on November 25, 2025. (End)
