International Netherlands: Market focus shifts to the Michigan Consumer Confidence Survey, which may bring Unfavourable Information for the dollar.
On August 16, Jin Shi Data reported that the dollar slightly weakened ahead of the Michigan consumer confidence data released tonight, after stronger-than-expected U.S. retail sales data was announced on Thursday. Chris Turner, an analyst at ING, pointed out in a report that the retail sales data has prompted investors to shift their expectations for a 25 basis point rate cut by the Federal Reserve in September, rather than a 50 basis point cut. He stated that the focus on Friday will be the University of Michigan’s consumer confidence survey for August. He noted, “This survey was conducted during the big dump in the stock market at the beginning of August, and consumer expectations may have further declined at that time.” He believes this could weaken the dollar.
