People’s Finance News, 8 April, said that recently, our country’s sodium-ion battery has made a major breakthrough. On 6 April, a team led by Hu Yongsheng from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, published a landmark achievement in 《Nature · Energy》: the team successfully developed a polymerizable non-flammable electrolyte (PNE) with a self-protection function. This is the first time globally that complete thermal runaway control has been achieved in ampere-hour–class sodium-ion batteries. This breakthrough updates people’s understanding of battery safety and lays a solid foundation for the commercialization and deployment of sodium-ion batteries in fields such as electric vehicles, heavy trucks, and large-scale energy storage. Recently, multiple listed companies responded on interactive platforms regarding their layout and progress in sodium batteries. Among them, Leading Smart stated that the company has end-to-end delivery capability for the entire manufacturing line of sodium-ion batteries, possesses 100% independent intellectual property rights, is leading in the share within the sodium equipment sector, covers all product form factors, has strong technical adaptability, and has already served top domestic and international enterprises in batch. EVE Energy stated that the company has a technical reserve for sodium-ion batteries and currently has not yet entered mass production. Chuantai Technology stated that its new sodium-based business is in the initial stage of business expansion; in the future, the company will actively develop downstream customers and reduce operating costs, and increase the utilization rate of sodium production capacity. Tianshui Poly? (Duofoto?) stated that the company’s cooperation related to sodium is advancing steadily; sodium hexafluorophosphate has been commercially mass-produced, supporting multiple mainstream sodium battery and electrolyte manufacturers. Research and development for both the anode and cathode are also in the pilot phase. At the same time, it collaborates with energy storage enterprises to promote sodium deployment in the energy storage sector. As an industry bellwether for the development of sodium battery technology and the acceleration of industrialization, CATL has clearly proposed that in 2026, sodium batteries will be widely promoted and applied at large scale in areas including swap-charging, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, and energy storage. CATL said at an earnings briefing in March that the company is accelerating the commercial deployment of its new sodium batteries, has already achieved some application in installed vehicles, and that overall performance is at an industry-leading level. If in the future the price of lithium carbonate further increases, the application scenarios and market penetration rate of new sodium batteries are expected to expand further. A research report by Shenwan Hongyuan points out that, compared with lithium batteries, sodium batteries have features such as high safety, fast charging, good rate performance, and low cost (sodium is cheaper than lithium). At the same time, production lines are compatible with lithium batteries; energy density has reached the level of mainstream LFP batteries, and the number of charge-discharge cycles has exceeded 30k times. It can be said that it perfectly meets the needs of energy storage. Sodium batteries are currently entering the prelude to industrialization and planning. As sodium battery costs accelerate downward, the value of lithium strategic resources is being reassessed. During the off-season, the lithium price core is moving upward; the importance attached to sodium batteries is increasing even more, and the industry is expected to see growth at an exponential rate.
