Recently, a senior student from Shenzhen Bao’an Middle School wrote a letter requesting the “removal of the bird’s nest” due to the unbearable noise from the cuckoo disturbing their studies. The principal did not simply accept the request but instead used an open letter to give the student a “life education lesson,” hoping the student could understand: the ultimate goal of education is not to make the world adapt to us, but to learn to coexist with the world. Many netizens praised the principal’s approach, saying “this is the meaning of education,” while others felt that the pressure on senior students is great and understood his request.

On March 27, the school’s party secretary and principal, Yuan Weixing, responded, stating that he had promptly contacted the student who wrote the letter and bought him earplugs. He also believed that, as the principal, he had the obligation to correctly guide students in their thinking. He wrote: “Behind this is actually a common problem. Today, someone complains about bird calls, tomorrow someone will complain about frogs croaking, cicadas singing, voices from dorm mates, the sound of the air conditioner outside the classroom, and even a supervising teacher moving during the college entrance examination could be considered a disturbance by them. As a principal, I have the duty to guide students to understand: the world will not pause for anyone due to something.”

The senior student who wrote the letter, Zeng, also responded to netizens’ concerns on his personal account, expressing gratitude for the principal’s careful teaching and the patient replies from netizens, which gave him new thoughts about life and nature.
