Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) shares were little changed intraday despite the announcement that Waymo will begin offering commercial robotaxi service in the three largest cities in Texas. The rollout of rides with no safety driver will begin Tuesday in Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio, as the company navigates regulatory hurdles that recently stalled its entry into New York.

Waymo said select riders from tens of thousands of local app downloaders will receive invitations first, with broader availability planned later this year.

According to Bloomberg, initial operating zones will range from 25 to 60 square miles, depending on the city. The report also noted that the expansion follows New York’s governor pulling a proposal that would have allowed driverless rides outside New York City, underscoring how regulation remains a gating factor. In Texas, Waymo has already been offering autonomous rides in Austin through the Uber (NYSE:UBER) app.

Waymo is using the multi-city launch to reinforce its scale claims. The company said it has logged over 200 million fully autonomous miles, and analysis of 127 million miles showed significant reductions in injury crashes compared with human benchmarks.

Waymo continues to expand its operations, with plans to enter more than 20 additional cities in 2026, including Tokyo and London.
