Crypto News report, April 25th, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, a 22-year-old man from Newport Beach, California, Evan Tangman, was sentenced by the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., to 70 months in prison and 3 years of supervised release for participating in a transnational social engineering crime group, assisting in laundering at least $3.5 million.
The criminal group has been operating since October 2023, stealing over $263 million in cryptocurrency through hacking, social engineering, and other methods.
Most members are unemployed youths under 20 or teenagers, originating from online gaming platforms.
Tangman was responsible for converting stolen cryptocurrencies into fiat currency and leasing luxury homes in Los Angeles, Miami, and other locations for group members.
He was also rewarded with luxury cars such as Bentley and Lamborghini.
After the incident, Tangman also instructed accomplices to destroy digital devices to eliminate evidence.
This case was jointly investigated by the FBI Washington, Los Angeles, and Miami field offices, along with the IRS Criminal Investigation Department, and nine suspects have already pleaded guilty.
