India conducts census again after 15 years, collecting caste information sparks controversy

India launches a nationwide census on April 1.
This census, conducted after 15 years, will collect controversial caste information, which has been criticized by public opinion for potentially exacerbating social tensions.
The Indian government has decided to conduct a comprehensive survey of most of the population across the country within approximately one year, deploying about 3 million census officers, collecting information and data through on-site household visits and electronic methods.
This census will be conducted in two phases, with the first phase focusing on basic housing conditions, and the second phase including personal information such as caste and economic status.
