People’s Finance and News, April 8 (reporter learned today) that the State Administration for Market Regulation has recently drafted the “Announcement of the State Administration for Market Regulation on Strictly Prohibiting the Use of ‘Fresh Lights’ (Draft for Comments)”. It is now open to the public to solicit comments. According to the “Law of the People’s Republic of China on the Protection of Consumer Rights and Interests” and the “Supervision and Administration Measures for Quality and Safety of Edible Agricultural Products Sold in the Market”, consumers enjoy the right to know the true information about the goods they purchase, use, or the services they receive. When selling fresh edible agricultural products, one must not use lighting and other facilities that mislead consumers by causing obvious changes to sensory characteristics such as the true color appearance of edible agricultural products. Recently, the State Administration for Market Regulation has found through monitoring that some market sellers are still using lighting and other facilities (referred to as “fresh lights”) that beautify sensory characteristics of fresh edible agricultural products such as meat, vegetables, fruits, etc. with specific light sources and colors, deceiving and misleading consumers’ understanding of the true sensory characteristics of edible agricultural products, disrupting market order, and endangering food safety.
