Intel entra en el juego de Musk “Terafab”, uniéndose para construir un imperio de potencia de cálculo de IA de 1 teravatio
Intel announces it is joining Musk’s “Terafab” project, and both sides will collaborate to advance semiconductor manufacturing and high-performance chip R&D. This move opens an important window for Intel’s long-sought contract manufacturing business.
On Tuesday, Intel announced the above cooperation on Musk’s social media platform X.com, and disclosed that it will work with SpaceX, Tesla, and Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI.
Intel says its capabilities in chip design, manufacturing, and packaging will help “Terafab” achieve a production target of 1 terawatt of compute power per year, providing compute support for the future development of AI and robotics technology.
The above cooperation is highly significant for Intel. This chip giant has for years continued to look for external contract manufacturing customers, and so far has not announced any substantive agreements; and cooperation with companies under Musk’s umbrella may become a key breakthrough for expanding its wafer foundry business. After the news was released, Intel’s stock price rose by about 2.5%, to $52.05.
Cooperation details still need to be clarified
Although Intel announced its entry in a high-profile manner, the specific details of this announcement remain relatively vague.
Intel did not disclose its specific positioning and role division in the “Terafab” project, and the two sides also did not release any financial terms or contract size. It only mentioned that Intel will participate by leveraging its overall capabilities in designing, manufacturing, and packaging semiconductors.
In fact, this cooperation has been foreshadowed for some time. Last month, at Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting, Musk publicly said that he might collaborate with Intel to build a semiconductor factory dedicated to serving his companies, but at the same time stated that no agreement had been signed between the two parties at that time.
Intel’s formal announcement of its involvement now marks the relationship moving from public statements to substantive progress.
Key milestones in Intel’s foundry strategy
This cooperation has special strategic value for Intel’s contract manufacturing business.
In recent years, Intel has pushed to transition toward wafer foundry services, actively seeking external customers to use its fabs to produce its own chips. However, this strategy has moved slowly, and to date it has not landed any publicly disclosed contract manufacturing deals. Intel previously said that it expects potential customers to begin making procurement decisions by the end of this year or early next year.
Enterprises under Musk’s umbrella span multiple high-compute-demand fields such as electric vehicles, aerospace, and artificial intelligence, so the demand volume for customized chips cannot be underestimated.
If the “Terafab” project proceeds as scheduled, Intel could use it to build its first benchmark case for its foundry business, break the long-standing predicament of lacking external customers, and demonstrate to the market that its manufacturing capabilities are sufficient to support chip demand from top technology enterprises.
