Investing.com – Uganda’s private sector continued to expand in March, with the Purchasing Managers Index rising from 54.2 in February to 54.3, marking a fourteenth consecutive month of improvement in the business environment.

The latest Standard Chartered Bank Uganda PMI data showed that output and new orders continued to grow under the push of favorable demand conditions. Companies reported an increase in the number of customers, improved customer purchasing power, and broadly based growth across all sectors.

Ugandan firms expanded their workforce in March, with many companies hiring temporary workers to support capacity. With an increase in the flow of new orders, backlogs of work rose for the second consecutive month.

Input costs rose during the month, and firms reported that additional hiring led to higher wage expenditures. Fuel and utilities costs were considered the main drivers of inflation. Construction was the only sector to record a decline in purchase prices, while wholesale and retail companies’ wage expenditures decreased.

Companies increased output prices in March in order to pass higher costs on to customers. Selling prices have been rising month on month for about 18 months.

Despite a further deterioration in supplier performance, firms expanded their purchasing activity for inputs and built up safety stock to cope with more new business.

Standard Chartered Bank economist Christopher Legilisho said that despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, firms remained optimistic about output over the next 12 months. He added that, according to the latest data released by Uganda’s Bureau of Statistics, overall inflation in March fell year on year to 2.8%.

Data collection period: March 12-27, 2026.
