Meta long-time content policy chief Monica Bickert is set to leave to join Harvard Law School. She was responsible for the development and execution of Facebook’s content policies and participated in decision-making regarding user safety issues for the company.

An internal announcement shows that Bickert has expressed a long-standing intention to pursue a teaching role. She will remain at Meta until August of this year and will work with Kevin Martin, who leads the global policy team, to facilitate the transition.

As the head of content policy, Bickert frequently served as the company’s spokesperson in response to controversies surrounding Meta’s handling of political content and issues related to adolescent mental health. She previously served as a federal prosecutor and joined Facebook in 2012, after which the company was rebranded as Meta.

After former Meta employee Frances Haugen disclosed internal documents in 2021, Bickert wrote, “Certainly, we are a profit-driven company, but to think that we do so at the expense of user safety and well-being is a misunderstanding of our own business interests.”

Meta’s Chief Executive Officer of Global Affairs, Joel Kaplan, praised Bickert’s work during her time at the company in a statement.
