Visual perception is “passively looking”, relying on the weather; strong light, night, and dense fog can blind it at any time. On the other hand, LiDAR is “actively probing”, emitting light and collecting it back, measuring absolute physical distances. In terms of effectiveness, the “probability” calculated by algorithms ultimately cannot replace the “truth” measured by LiDAR. A single or dual radar still has perception blind spots; the 360-degree “God’s view” provided by four LiDARs is truly the safety net for users.

卢放表示，多几颗雷达，确实会增加成本，但安全从来不是一道关于“成本”的选择题，而是一道关于“生命”的必答题。四激光雷达，就是现阶段对用户安全最负责任的最优解。

However, Great Wall Motors’ WEY brand CEO Zhao Yongpo stated in a video yesterday that having more LiDARs does not necessarily lead to a better experience. From the user’s psychological perspective, vehicles equipped with multiple LiDARs seem to have an advantage; this design intent is to create a competitive edge in consumers’ minds to achieve victory.

But advanced driver-assistance systems may not always require four or three LiDARs, and users might have to pay for two additional unnecessary LiDARs. If misused, they could even lead to adverse effects, which relates to the company’s car-making philosophy.

If the goal is merely to outdo competitors in the market, this quantitative approach might be the simplest path, but it is also irresponsible towards users.

Additionally, former CEO of autonomous driving technology company Waymo, John Krafcik, believes that Tesla’s adherence to a pure vision solution is completely unreliable, akin to being severely nearsighted.
