In September 2025, Gate officially announced the launch of Gate Layer, while also restructuring the token economy of its native token GT. This upgrade is not only a technological innovation but also a crucial step for Gate in its transition to becoming an infrastructure service provider under the "All in Web3" strategy. The following will comprehensively explore the significance and potential of Gate Layer 2 from the perspectives of technical architecture, token mechanisms, ecological support, advantages, and challenges.

1. The technical architecture and positioning of Gate Layer.

OP Stack + GateChain Settlement Layer

Gate Layer is built on the OP Stack and is fully compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), allowing developers to easily migrate dApps from the Ethereum / OP Stack ecosystem to Gate Layer.

At the same time, the settlement and security of GateLayer rely on GateChain as the main chain for protection. Transactions are executed and aggregated on Layer 2, but the final state will fall onto GateChain to ensure security and immutability.

In terms of GateChain, it has been upgraded to version 1.20, which adds support for Blob transactions (based on EIP-4844) and introduces compatibility updates for the Cancun EVM to enhance data availability and on-chain storage efficiency.

Performance metrics and cost expectations

According to official disclosure, the key performance indicators of Gate Layer are as follows:

  • TPS (Transactions Per Second): Supports a transaction processing capacity of over 5,700 transactions/second.
  • Block time: approximately 1 second block speed
  • Cost: It is reported that the network fee for processing one million transactions is less than $30, far below the cost levels of most L1 / L2 networks.

In addition, Gate Layer integrates the cross-chain protocol LayerZero, supporting the seamless flow of assets between chains such as Ethereum, Polygon, BSC, and Solana.

2. GT Token Economy Upgrade: From Transaction Token to Fuel Token

At the same time as the launch of Layer 2, Gate restructured its token GT (GateToken) to play a more central role in the Gate Layer ecosystem.

GT becomes the only Gas token

In the Gate Layer network, GT is designated as the unique Gas token. All transactions, contract calls, NFT minting, cross-chain transfers, and other operations must pay GT as a fee.

This design enhances the utility of GT, transitioning from its previous role more as a trading platform token to a true on-chain fuel / functional token.

Dual Deflation Mechanism and Burning Model

GT maintains and strengthens its deflationary mechanism by adopting a combination model of periodic buyback and destruction + EIP-1559 style fee destruction. This means that the platform will regularly execute a buyback and destruction strategy while automatically destroying the base fee portion in each transaction.

As of now, over 180 million GT have been destroyed, accounting for more than 60% of the initial issuance.

3. Ecological Support and Key Product Layout

The launch of Gate Layer is not just an upgrade of the chain itself; it is also accompanied by a series of ecological products to promote more users and projects to migrate to its ecosystem.

Perp DEX, Gate Fun and Meme Go

The Perp DEX module developed by Gate will build decentralized perpetual contract trading services on the Gate Layer, aiming for CEX-level liquidity and depth.

In addition, Gate Fun is positioned as a no-code launchpad / project incubation platform, allowing project parties to issue tokens and establish liquidity in a low-cost environment.

Meme Go is a cross-chain meme token monitoring and trading platform that enhances the platform’s features in emerging tokens/community assets.

Open Migration & Developer Support

Since Gate Layer is fully compatible with EVM, dApps, smart contracts, and tools (such as Hardhat, Remix, MetaMask, etc.) in the Ethereum / OP Stack ecosystem can be migrated smoothly.

Gate also claims that it will provide initial liquidity support and promotional resources for ecological projects, leveraging its user base, traffic, and trading platform capabilities to attract users and capital for developers.

4. Advantages, Challenges, and Future Outlook

Advantages

  1. Platform Traffic and User Base Advantage
Gate itself is a mature trading platform with a considerable number of users and trading volume, which can provide a point of entry for Gate Layer.
  2. Performance + Cost advantages are obvious
High TPS, low fees, and fast confirmation characteristics make many high-frequency / small amount scenarios more feasible.
  3. The value of the token is supported by the economic model
GT, as the sole Gas token with a dual burning mechanism, is expected to demonstrate value enhancement potential driven by demand.
  4. Ecological Closed Loop and Product Portfolio
With modules such as Perp, Launchpad, and meme trading, a complete ecological appeal can be formed.

Challenge

  1. Ecological implementation and project migration difficulty
Even if compatible with EVM, whether projects are willing to migrate assets/users still depends on factors such as liquidity, incentives, and risks.
  2. The competition is fierce.
Currently, there are multiple strong Layer 2 / Rollup projects (such as Base, Arbitrum, zkRollups) vying for market share.
  3. Can token yield match usage demand?
If the fuel demand for GT is insufficient, the deflationary/burning mechanism will struggle to drive prices up.
  4. Security / Bridging / Deployment Risks
As a new base layer, bridge security, smart contract vulnerabilities, and data availability issues may pose challenges.
  5. Regulatory / Compliance Risks
Cross-chain bridges, token burn / buyback mechanisms, etc., may attract regulatory attention in different countries / regions.

Future Outlook

In the coming months, it is particularly important to observe several key indicators of Gate Layer.

  • Are various dApp / DeFi projects starting to migrate to Gate Layer?
  • Does the usage amount of GT’s transaction fees / burning amount match the frequency of network interactions?
  • Trading volume / user activity after the launch of key products such as Perp
  • Operational performance of security / stability
  • Does Gate plan to launch more ecological incentive policies (such as airdrops / subsidies / project support)?

If Gate can successfully attract projects and users to migrate in, while maintaining technical stability and security, then Gate Layer has the potential to become one of the core infrastructures of the next generation CEX + DeFi hybrid ecosystem.
