I have recently been asked by many friends how to get started with Hong Kong stocks. In fact, investing in Hong Kong stocks is simpler than you might think. The Hong Kong Stock Exchange, as one of the top ten international financial centers globally, currently has over 2,600 listed companies, with a total market capitalization close to 38 trillion HKD. Major companies like Tencent, Alibaba, and BYD are listed here, and the market size and maturity are undeniable.

First, let me explain the trading characteristics of Hong Kong stocks, which every beginner must understand. Hong Kong stocks use a T+0 trading model, meaning you can sell the stock on the same day you buy it, with no limit on the number of trades, similar to the US market. Settlement is T+2, so funds from a Monday sale can only be withdrawn on Wednesday, but can be used immediately for further trading. Another important point—Hong Kong stocks have no daily price limit, but large-cap stocks have a volatility control mechanism. If the Hang Seng Index or China Enterprises Index components move more than 10% within 5 minutes, they enter a cooling-off period and can only be traded within a specified price range.

Trading hours are divided into three sessions: 9:00-9:30 AM is the opening auction, 9:30-12:00 PM and 1:00-4:00 PM are continuous trading, and 4:00-4:08 PM is the closing auction. The minimum trading unit is 1 lot, but the number of shares per lot varies; Tencent’s lot is 100 shares, while some companies might be 10 shares or tens of thousands.

There are mainly three ways to invest in Hong Kong stocks. The first is to buy individual stocks directly, which is the most traditional approach. Hong Kong stock codes are five-digit numbers starting with 0; the main board and GEM (Growth Enterprise Market) are separate, with GEM codes starting with 08. Beginners are advised to start with the main board, as its companies tend to have more mature business and financials. Hong Kong stocks also support short selling, but only for designated securities—about 1,000 or so. To buy individual Hong Kong stocks, you can open accounts with well-known brokers like Futu Securities or Tiger Brokers, but you need to use HKD or USD, and be mindful of exchange rate costs.

The second method is investing in indices or ETFs, which is less risky for beginners. Hong Kong has three main indices: Hang Seng Index, Hang Seng China Enterprises Index, and Hang Seng Tech Index. The Hang Seng Index is the most representative, comprising the largest and most actively traded main board companies. Currently, it has 83 constituent stocks, accounting for over 60% of the total market cap of Hong Kong stocks. You can invest in these indices via futures or ETFs, but futures require a high threshold of at least HKD 50,000, so most people prefer ETFs. ETFs are exchange-traded funds that can be bought and sold like stocks, such as the Tracker Fund of Hong Kong and Samsung Hang Seng Index Fund, which track the Hang Seng Index and are directly tradable through brokers.

The third is Contract for Difference (CFD), which is more suitable for short-term traders. CFDs are similar to futures but offer more flexible leverage and have no minimum deposit requirement, allowing both long and short positions. The advantage of trading Hong Kong stocks via CFDs is low fees—no commissions, only spreads—and high leverage, typically 1 to 30 times for individual stocks and up to 200 times for indices, far exceeding traditional brokers’ 2-4 times. For example, buying Tencent normally costs over HKD 30,000, but with CFDs, you might only need a few dollars, greatly reducing costs. However, leverage is a double-edged sword—it can amplify losses, so caution is necessary.

When it comes to stock selection, it’s best to choose blue-chip stocks—large, stable, mature companies. Tencent and Alibaba are typical examples. Looking at last year’s performance, Xiaomi rose over 120%, Ctrip increased by 94%, and BYD went up by 24%. These are some of the more popular Hong Kong stocks.

If you’re ready to start investing in Hong Kong stocks, the process is quite straightforward. Find a reliable platform to open an account, which usually offers virtual funds for practice. Then deposit funds—using Visa or Mastercard typically incurs lower fees. Search for the stock name or code, set whether to buy or sell, specify quantity, leverage, stop-loss, and take-profit parameters, and you can place an order directly. The whole process can be completed in just a few minutes.

Overall, the barrier to investing in Hong Kong stocks isn’t high; the key is understanding market rules and finding the investment approach that suits you. Beginners can start with index ETFs, and once familiar, gradually try individual stocks or other tools. The Hong Kong market is mature, regulated, and liquid, making it worth investing time to learn.
