Ethereum has continuously evolved since its launch, with each major upgrade addressing a different challenge. The Merge transformed the network's consensus mechanism in 2022, significantly reducing energy consumption. Lean Ethereum shifts the focus toward protocol efficiency, scalability, security, privacy, and long-term infrastructure.

Rather than introducing a single feature, the roadmap presents a coordinated redesign of Ethereum's architecture over the next three to four years.

Unveiled by Vitalik Buterin on **July 4**, Lean Ethereum outlines a series of protocol forks that collectively modernize the network's foundation.

The roadmap combines improvements across consensus, cryptography, fee markets, state management, and transaction processing into one long-term development strategy. It represents Ethereum's largest planned protocol evolution since The Merge.

A central component of the roadmap is **recursive STARK verification**, an advanced cryptographic framework designed to improve verification efficiency while maintaining strong security standards.

The proposal also introduces **1–2 round transaction finality**, reducing the number of confirmation rounds required before transactions become final. Faster confirmation strengthens network responsiveness for wallets, decentralized applications, exchanges, and payment systems.

Together, these protocol improvements focus on increasing throughput while maintaining Ethereum's decentralized architecture.

Transaction costs remain one of Ethereum's most discussed challenges.

Lean Ethereum introduces **multidimensional gas pricing**, allowing different network resources to be priced independently instead of relying on a single gas market.

The roadmap targets **more than a 10× reduction in gas fees**, improving transaction efficiency across decentralized finance, stablecoins, NFT marketplaces, gaming platforms, and other blockchain applications.
