The most important thing about this XRP vulnerability is not the vulnerability itself, but how it was patched. The payment engine has had an arithmetic overflow since it was written in 2015, theoretically allowing someone to mint XRP out of thin air by putting up just a few hundred XRP as collateral. Officials investigated and found no evidence it had been exploited over the public network. What’s interesting is how it was fixed: it did not go through an amendment vote; it took effect directly once nodes installed version 3.4.1. The officials themselves acknowledged that this was the first time in more than ten years that the amendment mechanism had been bypassed this way. The reasoning is easy to understand—once the patch is made public, it tells everyone where the vulnerability is, while waiting another two weeks for a vote leaves the risk exposed. More than 80% of validators on the default list had upgraded by the day of release. Token holders don’t need to do anything; node operators should upgrade to 3.4.1 or later. $XRP
