Local time May 5th, the President of the European Commission von der Leyen responded to U.S. President Trump’s recent threat of automobile tariffs, stating that the United States cannot unilaterally raise tariffs, and the EU is prepared for “all scenarios.”
On May 1st, Trump posted on social media that because the EU did not comply with the bilateral trade agreement with the United States, the U.S. would increase import tariffs on EU-made cars exported to the U.S.
Trump said that the tariffs on EU cars exported to the U.S. would be raised to 25%. If these cars are produced in the U.S., there will be no tariffs.
In response, a spokesperson for the European Commission said that the EU will “reserve all options” and assess possible subsequent countermeasures.
The spokesperson also stated that the EU is implementing the relevant trade agreements according to normal legislative procedures and is continuously informing the U.S. side of the progress during the process. (CCTV News)
