Microsoft lanza un nuevo chip cuántico con la esperanza de crear una computadora cuántica práctica para 2029

Golden Finance reports that on June 3rd, Microsoft (MSFT.O) announced the launch of an upgraded quantum computing chip and stated that it is expected to develop a commercially practical quantum computer before 2029. The company unveiled the “Majorana 2” chip at the Build 2026 developer conference on Tuesday. The chip is a follow-up to a previous research device that first appeared a year ago and sparked controversy in the closely related field of quantum computing. Microsoft's new device features 12 qubits — the fundamental units of quantum computing — an increase from the 8 of the previous generation. However, Microsoft stated that its main achievement is that these qubits have a coherence time of over 20 seconds. The company said that in the previous model, qubits would disappear in less than 12 milliseconds. Additionally, “Majorana 2” replaces the aluminum connectors of the previous model with lead superconductors. “Given this rapid progress, we are accelerating our roadmap to achieve scalable, practical quantum computers,” said Chetan Nayak, a Microsoft Fellow and executive responsible for quantum hardware. “We have halved the timeline, and our current goal is to achieve this before 2029.”
