Golden Finance report, on May 3rd, the Office of Foreign Assets Control under the U.S. Department of the Treasury warned on May 1st local time that any shipping company paying tolls through the Strait of Hormuz in any form, including charitable donations, could be subject to U.S. sanctions.
The Office of Foreign Assets Control issued a document on April 28th stating that the United States prohibits its own individuals or entities from paying tolls for the Strait of Hormuz to Iran, and that non-U.S. individuals or entities paying such tolls to Iran also pose a significant sanctions risk.
The office stated on May 1st that Iran’s payment requests may include not only cash transfers but also digital assets, debt offsets, informal exchanges, or other physical payments, including charitable donations to the Iranian Red Crescent and Iranian embassies.
Any individual or entity, regardless of the method, that makes a payment to Iran could face U.S. sanctions. It is currently unclear whether any companies or countries have engaged in such indirect payments.
It is reported that at least $2 million was paid by an entity to Iran to enable a ship to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. The Office of Foreign Assets Control also announced new sanctions against three Iranian foreign exchange agencies. (Jinshi)
