Trump’s letter claimed that the U.S. had ceased combat operations against Iran on April 7th, when a temporary ceasefire agreement was reached between the two countries, and that agreement had been extended. If hostilities resume, the 60-day countdown will reset and restart—this legal interpretation is likely to be challenged by Senate Democrats. “Since April 7, 2026, there has been no fighting between U.S. forces and Iran.
