Golden Finance reports that on April 30th, Nick Timiraos, the chief economic correspondent stationed in Washington for The Wall Street Journal and known as the "mouthpiece of the Federal Reserve," published an article on the latest Federal Reserve meeting, pointing out that uncertainties surrounding the direction of interest rates and the transfer of power are emerging simultaneously.
On Wednesday, Federal Reserve Chairman Powell explicitly stated at a press conference that he would not resign immediately and would continue to serve as a board member after completing the chairmanship transition next month. This decision breaks the 75-year-old tradition of successive chairmen leaving the central bank entirely upon their successors' appointment.
At the same time, multiple Federal Reserve officials issued a consistent signal: there will be no rate cuts in the short term. Powell’s three colleagues publicly disagreed with the language used in policy communication, opposing continued hints that the likelihood of rate cuts is higher than that of rate hikes. Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, and Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan expressed this stance, indicating that under the backdrop of rising energy prices, core inflation remaining around 3%, and the ongoing transmission of tariff effects, monetary policy is unlikely to shift towards easing.
Timiraos stated that Kevin Wirth, who is about to succeed as chairman, faces a dual constraint. On one hand, the White House hopes to see rate cuts; on the other hand, a more hawkish consensus has already emerged within the Federal Open Market Committee.
