Japan Spends $96B to Defend Yen as It Weakens to 160 Per Dollar
According to Japan's Ministry of Finance, Japan spent approximately $96 billion in currency interventions in 2026 to defend the yen as it weakened to 160.725 per dollar on April 30. The April-to-May intervention alone totaled roughly $73-73.5 billion, the largest single-month operation on record. Japan's largest single-day intervention occurred on April 30, exceeding $40 billion. A subsequent operation on July 30 was estimated at around $53 billion.
