Golden Finance reports: On March 31, Australia’s network security regulator issued a statement saying it is investigating social platforms such as Meta, Instagram, and Snap, because they may not have complied with the country’s social media ban targeting people under 16. The regulator noted that there currently are not enough safeguards in place to prevent users under 16 from creating new accounts, and that some platforms even allow minors to repeatedly try the same age-verification method until they pass. In response, the regulator said it has a range of enforcement powers, including issuing compliance notices, enforceable undertakings, publishing a public “platform provider notice,” and civil penalties of up to AUD 49.5 million. It has now begun collecting evidence in preparation for taking action.
