According to the first official briefed on the negotiations, Šefčovič warned US officials that imposing a 20 percent tariff on goods imported from the EU would be "devastating" for the EU. The level of tariffs in the United States will be higher than at any stage since the introduction of the Common Trade Policy by the founding members of the European Union in the late 50s.
