Research has shown that walking 10,000 steps a day is beneficial
Walking 9,000 to 10,000 steps a day reduces the risk of early death or cardiovascular disease, adding evidence to an idea that has been criticized as unscientific, writes Newscientist. The publication noted that the origin of the widespread belief that people should walk 10,000 steps a day is unclear, but it is linked to a marketing campaign to promote pedometers in Japan.
Now, a study by Matthew Ahmadi of the University of Sydney and his colleagues suggests that this number may have some significance.
The team analyzed data from more than 72,000 participants with an average age of 61 who wore accelerometers on their wrists to track movements for one week. “We were able to count daily steps,” Ahmadi said.
Scientists found out that the optimal number of steps per day is 9-10 thousand, and when a person walked above this indicator, the benefits were nullified.
Other news about the number of steps per day
Earlier, the American physiologist said that 5 thousand steps a day is a “sedentary lifestyle”. According to him, 7,000 steps per day or more will bring health benefits.
Women aged 63 to 99 only need an average of 3,600 steps a day to reduce their risk of heart failure by 26%, new research suggests.
