AI asks · Why does Chevron warn that the energy shortfall equals the scale of five Saudi oil producers?

【Chevron warns: A huge energy gap is coming in the next decade, and fossil fuels remain indispensable】Caixin Global, March 31 — US energy giant Chevron said that, in order to meet the surging energy demand driven by population growth, the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence applications, and a decline in traditional energy output, the world must expand energy supply sources now. At the 2026 CERAWeek conference, Chevron CEO Mike Wirth and senior executives laid out a strategy to achieve this goal by expanding the supply of oil, natural gas, and emerging technologies, while using artificial intelligence to improve efficiency and the level of decision-making. Wirth also warned that the natural decline in output at existing oil and natural gas fields could lead to a very large supply gap in the coming decade—equivalent to the “scale of five Saudi oil producers”—highlighting how massive the required investment is. Notably, Chevron is actively advocating its so-called “energy replenishment” strategy, which aims to increase total supply to stabilize the market and ensure the reliability of supply, rather than simply calling for a complete abandonment of fossil fuels.
