Just realized I've been sleeping on some decent bank bonuses that were floating around. A bunch of the major banks were basically handing out free bank money if you just opened an account and did the minimum stuff like setting up direct deposit. Some of these offers are wrapping up soon or already expired, but it's worth knowing what was available.

Wells Fargo was offering $325 just for opening a checking account - you needed to get at least $1,000 in direct deposits within 90 days and maintain a decent balance. Chase had a similar play with $300 if you did direct deposits of $500+ in the first 90 days. Both were solid if you were already looking to switch banks anyway.

The one that caught my attention was SoFi because they combined checking and savings in one account. The free bank money ranged from $50 to $300 depending on how much you deposited upfront, plus they were advertising APY rates up to 4.50% on savings. No monthly fees either, which is kind of rare. Citi was also in the mix with $325 but required two direct deposits totaling at least $3,000 within 90 days.

Honestly, if you're not just chasing the bonus but actually need a new account, this kind of free bank money is basically free money you're leaving on the table. The catch is always the same - they want to see direct deposits and they want you to keep a minimum balance. Most of these offers had expiration dates somewhere between October 2025 and early 2026, so some might be done by now, but banks usually cycle these promotions pretty regularly.

The whole thing is kind of a no-brainer if you're already planning to move money around anyway. You get the account you need plus a couple hundred bucks just for signing up. Definitely worth checking if any current offers are running when you're actually ready to open something new.
