just realized markets are closed monday for memorial day and was wondering are markets open memorial day since i had some trades planned lol. apparently both nyse and nasdaq shut down completely for the full day so no trading at all. they reopen tuesday morning at 9:30am et.

anyway got curious about why this is a thing. so memorial day started way back after the civil war as decoration day in 1868 to honor soldiers. didn't become official memorial day until 1971 when they moved it to the last monday in may. basically gives everyone a long weekend and time to remember military personnel who died in service.

so yeah if you're wondering are markets open memorial day the answer is no - everything's closed. stock market, nasdaq, bonds, all of it. same deal applies to treasury and corporate bonds too. sifma keeps bond markets closed on federal holidays just like the stock exchanges do.

people usually spend the day visiting memorials, family stuff, or just reflecting. there's even this moment of remembrance at 3pm local time where you're supposed to pause for a minute. kind of a good reminder to step back from the charts for a day ngl
