Just figured out how to properly update your SASSA details without getting stuck in the system. Turns out there's a completely different process depending on whether you're on permanent grants or the SRD R370 thing.

If you're getting regular grants (old age, disability, child support), you literally have to go in person to a SASSA office. Can't do it online, which is kind of annoying but I guess they need to verify everything. You'll need your ID, proof of your new bank account (bank statement not older than three months works), and they'll have you fill out a payment method change form. The whole process takes up to 21 days for the bank to verify, so timing matters—need to get it done before the 15th of the month if you want it to kick in the next cycle.

Changing your phone number is basically the same deal for permanent grants—you either go to the office or call 0800 60 10 11 and they'll walk you through it.

Now, if you're on SRD R370, everything's online which is way easier. You go to the SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they send you a secure link via SMS to your current number. Click the link, update your banking details or changing number phone info, and submit. Just make sure whatever account you're putting the money into is actually in your name—they won't pay into joint accounts or anything like that.

One thing I noticed: people keep trying to use sketchy unofficial websites for this stuff. Don't do it. Always use the official SASSA portal to protect yourself. If the online process isn't working, just call SASSA directly or visit an office in person. Slower maybe, but way safer than messing with random sites claiming they can help you change your number phone details.
