Just realized a lot of people struggle with updating their SASSA details, especially when December payments are coming. Been looking into how to check sassa banking details and what actually needs to change, so let me share what I found.

If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you can't just do this online unfortunately. You have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office with your ID and proof of your new bank account. They need a bank statement not older than three months or an official letter from your bank confirming the account is in your name. Important thing: SASSA won't pay into joint accounts or third-party accounts, so make sure it's solely yours.

Once you submit the form, it takes up to 21 working days for the bank to verify everything. And if you're trying to get it sorted before next month's payment, you need to do it before the 15th of the current month. Miss that and you're waiting another cycle.

For your phone number, same deal – you need to go in person or call their helpline at 0800 60 10 11. They'll walk you through updating your contact details.

Now, if you're on the SRD grant (R370), that's different. You can actually do the whole thing online through their portal. You enter your ID number, they send you a secure link via SMS, and you update your bank details there. Same rules apply though – account must be in your name. For your phone number on SRD, use their contact portal, enter your ID and Application ID, put in your new number, and they'll send you an OTP to verify.

One heads up: there are fake SASSA websites out there trying to scam people. Always use the official portal or call their official number. Don't risk your grant payments.
