Just got asked about updating SASSA details again, so here's the real breakdown for anyone struggling with this.
If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you literally have to go to a SASSA office in person. No way around it. You'll need to fill out the Payment Method Change Form, bring your original SA ID, and proof of your new bank account (bank statement or letter, not older than 3 months). They send it to the bank for verification, which takes up to 21 working days. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect next month, otherwise you're waiting another cycle.
For the SRD R350 grant though, it's way different. The whole thing is online through the official SASSA SRD portal. You enter your ID number, they send you a secure SMS link, and you change your banking details right there. The account has to be in your name though—no joint or third-party accounts, they won't process it. Takes a few days to weeks for the bank to verify the new info.
Changing your cellphone number? Same deal—SRD grant is all online through their contact portal. You'll need your ID and Application ID, enter the new number, pick a reason for the change, and they'll send you an OTP to verify. For permanent grants, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit the office.
One thing: watch out for fake SASSA websites. Always use the official link. People have lost money to scams pretending to help with SRD R350 updates. Just go straight to the real portal or the office if you're unsure.
