Just realized a lot of people are struggling with how to change banking details on their SASSA grants, especially with the December payments coming up. Here's what actually works based on what I've learned.

If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), you can't do this online unfortunately. You have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office with your ID and proof of your new bank account. They'll give you a form to fill out, and honestly it's pretty straightforward. Just make sure your bank statement is recent (less than 3 months old) and that the account is only in your name - they won't pay into joint accounts or anything like that. Takes about 21 working days for them to verify it with the bank.

The key thing is timing - if you want the change to take effect next month, you need to submit it before the 15th. Miss that and you're waiting another month.

Now if you're on the SRD grant (that R370 relief), you can actually change banking details online through their portal, which is way easier. Same rule applies though - account must be in your name. Takes a few days to a week for verification.

For updating your cellphone number on SRD, use their online contact details page. You'll need your ID and application ID, then they send you an OTP to confirm. If the portal's giving you trouble, just call 0800 60 10 11 or visit an office - sometimes that's faster anyway.

One heads up: there are fake websites pretending to be SASSA, so always make sure you're on the official portal. Not worth the risk with your personal details.
