Just went through the whole SASSA update process and honestly, it's not as complicated as people make it sound, but you definitely need to know what you're doing. So here's the real deal.
If you're on a permanent grant like old age or disability, forget about doing this online. You have to go to your nearest SASSA office in person and fill out the Payment Method Change Form. Bring your original ID, a copy, and a recent bank statement (stamped, less than 3 months old) showing the account is in your name only. They don't mess around with joint accounts or third-party payments. Once they process it, give it up to 21 working days for the bank to verify everything. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect next month, otherwise you're waiting another cycle.
Now, if you're on the SRD R370 grant, that's a whole different story and way easier. This one you can actually update banking details online through the official SASSA SRD portal. You enter your 13-digit ID number, they send you a secure SMS link, you click it and enter your new bank details. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for verification, but at least you're not sitting in an office queue. Same rule applies though: the account has to be in your name, no exceptions.
For updating your phone number, it depends which grant you're on. Permanent grants? Call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit the office. SRD? Use their contact details portal, enter your ID and Application ID, punch in your new number, wait for the OTP on your new phone, confirm it, done. The phone number matters because that's how they send you payment notifications and verification codes.
One last thing: there's a bunch of dodgy websites out there pretending to be SASSA. Don't fall for it. Always use the official portal or call the real helpline. Losing access to your grant because someone scammed your details is not worth it.
