If you're getting the permanent grants (old age, disability, child support), you basically have to go in person to your local SASSA office. No way around it. You'll need to fill out a Payment Method Change Form, bring your ID (original and copy), and proof of your new bank account—like a bank statement from the last three months or a letter from your bank. They'll verify everything, send it to the bank, and it can take up to 21 days. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect next cycle, otherwise you're waiting another month.
But here's the thing—if you're on the SRD R370 grant, the whole process is online, which is way easier. You just go to the official SASSA SRD website and find the banking details section. Enter your ID number, they send you a secure link via SMS, and you update your account details there. The bank will verify it, could take a few days to a couple weeks. Just make sure the account is in your name—they won't pay into joint or third-party accounts.
Changing your phone number on SRD is pretty straightforward too. Same portal, enter your ID and application ID, put in your new number, and they'll send you an OTP to verify. Done. But honestly, if you're having trouble with the online portal, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit an office in person. Sometimes that's just faster, even if there's a wait.
One more thing—watch out for fake websites. There are scams out there pretending to be SASSA, so always use the official link. Your personal info is too important to mess around with that stuff.
