Chinese representative: The United States is the instigator of the Iran nuclear crisis
On the 12th, Fu Cong, China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said at the Security Council Iran Sanctions Committee briefing that, as the instigator of the Iran nuclear crisis, the United States’ actions violate international law and the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, which China strongly condemns.
Fu Cong said that, as a member of the Security Council, China would like to emphasize the following points regarding the current Iran nuclear situation and its future path:
First, force is not the proper way to resolve international disputes. Iran’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity should be respected. The United States and Israel should immediately stop military actions, and must not attack Iran’s nuclear facilities that are subject to international Atomic Energy Agency safeguards, so as to prevent tensions from escalating further and to stop the conflict from spreading throughout the entire Middle East.
Second, the Iran nuclear issue must ultimately return to the track of political and diplomatic resolution. It was the United States’ unilateral withdrawal from the comprehensive agreement on the Iran nuclear issue that triggered the Iran nuclear crisis, and it is also the United States disregarding its own credibility and, together with Israel, twice taking the audacious step of resorting to military force against Iran during the negotiations process, resulting in diplomatic efforts coming to nothing. As the instigator of the Iran nuclear crisis, the United States has acted in violation of international law and the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, which China strongly condemns.
Third, fairness and justice must be upheld, and Iran’s rights as a State Party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons to the peaceful use of nuclear energy must be effectively guaranteed. According to reports of the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Director General’s statements, there is no evidence that Iran plans to develop nuclear weapons. The verified comprehensive agreement demonstrates that, through full and strict safeguards and supervision of Iran, it is fully possible to ensure the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program.
Fourth, the starting point for the Security Council’s actions should be to ease tensions, maintain long-term stability in the Middle East, and not lose sight of fairness and justice, nor should it become a tool for sanctions and pressure or for serving the political agenda of any particular country.
