I just realized that many new people entering crypto are confused about how to manage their assets. Today, I want to share about two basic types of cryptocurrency wallets that everyone needs to know: hot wallets and cold wallets.

First is the hot wallet. This is a type of wallet connected directly to the internet, so you can trade or check your assets at any time. If you often participate in DeFi, staking, or frequent trading, then a hot wallet is a very convenient choice. Applications like MetaMask and Trust Wallet are used by many people. Additionally, major exchanges also provide hot wallets for users.

But convenience always comes with a price. Because hot wallets are always online, the risk of hacking is quite high if you're not careful. A single click on a fake link (phishing) or a security vulnerability could cause you to lose all your assets. Moreover, if the wallet platform or exchange experiences a bug or is attacked, you also risk losing your money.

Conversely, cold wallets operate completely offline. You can store Bitcoin, Ethereum, or other tokens without worrying about remote hacking. Hardware devices like Ledger Nano S/X or Trezor are typical examples. Private keys are entirely controlled by you, independent of any third party. That’s why cold wallets are considered the safest storage method.

Of course, cold wallets also have disadvantages. Every time you make a transaction, you need to connect the device or manually enter the keys, which takes more time than a hot wallet. The cost is also not small—Ledger or Trezor devices range from 1 to 3 million VND.

Based on my experience, if your assets are large, split them into two parts. Use a hot wallet for daily transactions (about 10-20% of your capital), and store the remaining (80-90%) in a cold wallet for safety. If you're just starting out and only trading small amounts, a hot wallet is sufficient. But as your assets grow, having a cold wallet becomes truly necessary.

In summary, both hot and cold wallets have their own advantages and disadvantages. Choosing the right one for your needs is the most important thing. If you have any questions about setting up or using them, just ask me!
