Researchers synthesize new nuclides Berkelium-235 and Americium-231

According to a report from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the synthesis and study of new nuclides are at the forefront of atomic nucleus physics and are of great significance for exploring the limits of the atomic nucleus, testing nuclear mass models, and revealing new decay patterns. Recently, the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other institutions successfully synthesized the new nuclide berkelium-235 and its alpha-decay daughter nuclide americium-231 for the first time. This research provides important experimental basis for understanding the nuclear structure and decay characteristics of nuclei in the heavy-nuclei region, and further expands the map of our knowledge of nuclides.
