Russian Ambassador to Iran Aleksey Jedotov said in an interview with Russian media on March 31 that Iran’s Supreme Leader Mujtaba Khamenei is currently in Iran, but is avoiding public appearances. TASS, citing Jedotov, reported that, as Iran’s leadership has repeatedly stated, Mujtaba “for obvious reasons” is avoiding public appearances. Jedotov said that he has not yet been able to get in touch with Mujtaba. However, he emphasized that Russian President Putin is one of the earliest foreign leaders to have sent congratulatory messages to Mujtaba.

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a large-scale military operation against Iran, during which Iran’s then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and multiple senior military and political officials were killed in airstrikes. An Iranian experts’ conference issued a statement on March 8, announcing the nomination of Mujtaba Khamenei, the son of Khamenei, as the new Supreme Leader. Israel said that the assassination of Iran’s leadership will continue.
