A few days ago, everyone gathered together for a meal, and my 20-year-old cousin made a new set of New Year nails. My 3-year-old niece kept looking at her nails.
My cousin's mother perhaps couldn't stand her nails or maybe was just looking for something to talk about to tease the kid, so she kept asking my niece: "Auntie's nails are really ugly, they're so ugly, so ugly."
My niece initially didn't speak and kept shaking her head.
After my cousin's mother repeatedly said "so ugly, so ugly,"
my niece suddenly said very seriously: "Can you shut up? Your words are unpleasant, but it looks good."
Her tone was calm, without urgency or anger, just very composed.
As soon as she finished speaking, over a dozen people in the family looked at her in shock.
Hearing her say that, I was also very surprised—surprised by how clearly a 3-year-old girl could express her logic, and also surprised by her courage to speak up and challenge in front of the whole family.
May she always have the courage to be herself, no matter how old she gets.
