The Trump administration is considering withdrawing U.S. troops from some NATO member countries

The Trump administration is considering punishing NATO members that do not support the U.S., with plans including pulling back troops and redeploying them to countries that support America, while possibly closing some bases.

This plan is still in the preliminary stage and could lead to more U.S. troops near the Russian border.

On April 8, according to WSJ, U.S. government officials revealed that the Trump administration is considering a plan aimed at punishing some NATO members who did not support the U.S. and Israel during the Iran war.

The proposal includes withdrawing U.S. troops from these countries and redeploying them to countries more supportive of U.S. military actions. The plan is currently in the early conceptual stage and is one of several NATO punishment options being discussed by the White House.

This proposal is far less severe than Trump’s recent threats to completely withdraw the U.S. from NATO, and Trump does not have the authority to withdraw from NATO without Congressional approval.

According to two government officials, besides redeploying troops, the plan may also include closing at least one U.S. military base in Europe, possibly in Spain or Germany. Countries like Poland, Romania, Lithuania, and Greece could benefit as they are viewed as supporters.

The plan could result in more U.S. troops being stationed closer to the Russian border, likely provoking Moscow.
