I just came across some interesting historical statistics about how long the countries of the Ottoman Empire were under its control. Honestly, the scale of this empire's expansion is impressive.

In Europe, the picture was especially interesting. Turkey remained under Ottoman rule for a full 623 years, Bulgarians experienced 515 years of occupation, and North Macedonians about 542 years. Greece suffered differently depending on the region—some areas 370 years, others up to 520 years. Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina—all spent over four centuries under Ottoman rule. Even Albania counts 527 years under this control. Interestingly, Croatia and Hungary were affected less—about 147 and 160-192 years respectively.

In the Caucasus, the situation was no less complex. Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and parts of Russian territories all fell under Ottoman influence at different times. Dagestan and Kabardino remained under control for about 355 years.

But what’s especially impressive is the territory coverage of the Ottoman Empire in the Middle East. Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon—all these lands were conquered. Egypt and Sudan experienced approximately 365-397 years of occupation. Saudi Arabia, including Hejaz and Najd, was under Ottoman rule for about 393 years.

In Africa, the empire’s influence stretched from Libya to Eritrea and Djibouti. Libya was under control for 382 years, Algeria for 315 years, Tunisia for 307-330 years. Even regions like Somalia and Kenya experienced Ottoman rule.

This history shows how globally influential this empire was. The countries of the Ottoman Empire literally spanned three continents. It’s interesting to consider how such a long period of dominance affected the culture and history of these peoples.
