The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, welcomed the agreement between the United States and Iran to ceasefire for two weeks, emphasizing that it is an important step in the right direction to prevent the region from sliding into catastrophic scenarios.
Aboul Gheit also stressed the need for Iran to immediately cease all military attacks, open the Strait of Hormuz for maritime navigation, and secure energy supplies. He confirmed that any future arrangements reached between the United States and Iran must ensure the interests of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries that have been subjected to Iranian attacks, respect their sovereignty, and consider their fundamental security requirements.
Spokesperson Gamal Roshdy, on behalf of the Secretary-General, conveyed Aboul Gheit’s renewed emphasis that regional security is indivisible, and that the principles outlined in the Arab joint vision for security and cooperation in the region remain the solid foundation for sustainable peace.
