I was wondering which countries are actually the poorest in the world, so I looked at data from 2024. When you look at GDP per capita, it's really depressing. South Sudan, Burundi, Central African Republic, DRC – all African countries dominate the list of the poorest countries in the world. It's no coincidence; it's the result of decades of conflict, corruption, and poor infrastructure. Niger, Mozambique, Malawi – they’re there too. But I was surprised to see Liberia and Yemen in the top 10 poorest countries in the world. Yemen is an interesting case because it used to have a better economy before civil war broke out. Madagascar also surprised me—a island with so many resources yet still among the poorest. When you look at it, you see that the poorest countries in the world aren’t poor just for no reason – there’s always some systemic problem behind it. I’m curious about how this could be changed.
