Elon Musk’s Ambition
Reconstructing Future Society: The Disruption of Currency, Energy, and Survival Logic
One of Elon Musk’s most controversial predictions is nothing less than the complete overthrow of the traditional logic by which society operates: “Don’t save for retirement—10 to 20 years from now, money may no longer matter.” In his vision, AI and robots will completely reshape production relations, bringing the production costs of the vast majority of goods and services infinitely close to zero, and ultimately achieving high income for everyone; the value foundation on which currency depends will be thoroughly shaken. At its core, this view is an extreme elaboration of the classic principle that “productive forces determine production relations”: when AI and automation take over almost every stage of production, the value of human labor will be redefined entirely, and the wealth-distribution logic that has persisted for hundreds of years will also face fundamental change.
But this utopian-sounding idea, from the very first day it is put into practice, runs into real-world barriers that are difficult to overcome. The global wealth gap, unequal resource allocation, and the monopolistic barriers held by technology giants will not automatically be erased by the development of AI; instead, they may be further exacerbated as the technological divide continues to widen. When a small number of tech giants control the core technologies of AI and automation, they effectively control the rights to produce and to distribute in the future society. If ordinary individuals are unable to participate in the distribution of technological dividends, the so-called “high income for everyone” will only become a mirage—potentially even giving rise to an extreme split of “tech oligarchs and digital poverty,” where the wealth gap, from the level of wealth itself, becomes fully entrenched as an insurmountable class division.
In Musk’s future blueprint, solar energy is the only answer that supports all of this. He proposes a highly ambitious three-step strategy: improve the efficiency of the electric grid, launch solar AI satellites, and build satellite factories on the Moon, attempting to provide inexhaustible fuel for the limitless development of AI by gaining access to nearly unlimited clean energy. This concept directly elevates the energy problem to the core position in future society: the essence of future currency is energy—once you have energy, you can power AI, and then change the physical world. This logic precisely captures the core contradiction of the AI era—the eternal conflict between infinite demand for computing power and the limited supply of energy—and also offers an aggressive yet imaginative solution for the sustainable development of human society.
