The State Administration for Market Regulation conducted on-site undercover inspections in Chongqing and Sichuan, focusing on sudden checks of issues related to "anesthetic fish" and bleached chicken feet.

On April 7, the State Administration for Market Regulation said in a post on its official website that from March 30 to 31, the administration’s office for oversight of work style and conduct adopted a “no prior notice/no prior arrangement, surprise visits” approach to conduct spot-checks on the “anesthetized fish” issue at the Chongqing Lebang Aquatic Products Wholesale Market, which had been exposed by the media. Chongqing Shi Cengqiao Food Company, Sichuan Shufu Xiang Food Company, and Chengdu Mingyang Food Company were also subject to a surprise inspection regarding the issue that they used hydrogen peroxide at overly high concentrations to bleach chicken feet, and on-site the law-enforcement teams carried out an “honest governance and strict discipline” education and rectification to identify problems.

The office for oversight of work style and conduct stated that market regulatory authorities in Chongqing and Sichuan must adhere to a problem-oriented approach and make targeted efforts. They must take the issues exposed by the media as key leads, investigate and punish illegal business practices strictly in accordance with law, implement “one case, two investigations,” carry out in-depth reviews to identify prominent problems in regulatory enforcement, and for certain public officials who are found, once verified, to have neglected their duties or abused their powers for personal gain, they must be seriously dealt with in accordance with laws and regulations.

The office for oversight of work style and conduct also, in the places where the exposed companies are located—Hefang District of Chongqing and Qionglai City of Sichuan—participated respectively in the local market regulatory authorities’ “Why enforce the law, and for whom enforce the law” university-style large discussion and drive-improvement activities. Comrades attending the meeting held discussions and reflections based on recent typical cases, identified their own problems, and further deepened their understanding of correcting the purposes of law enforcement and standing firm in their law-enforcement position.
