Ask AI · How can big data help police solve a 26-year cold case in 12 hours?

On April 5, according to Jiujiang Public Security: with the heavens’ net spread wide, nothing escapes—though it seems sparse, nothing slips through. A manhunt that spanned 26 years has finally come to an end in the warm, everyday bustle of city life. The fugitive who once defrauded nearly 1 million—after living under a false identity and hiding in plain sight as a responsible pork stall owner at a market—still could not escape the net of big-data investigation.

A “perfect” disguise as a market stall vendor

In the eyes of neighbors, Sun is a widely recognized “upstanding person.” In his day-to-day life, he runs a pork shop. His routine is dull, and his schedule is extremely regular. From 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. every day, he goes to the wholesale market to buy goods; during the daytime he stays in the shop all day to sell, has no hobbies, and his social circle is limited to only a few vendors in the market.

Over the years, whenever he sold meat, he always gave full weight and full amount, and he never got into arguments with anyone. Even his wife, whom he had been living with for years, had never noticed. This husband who shares their everyday life turned out, in fact, to be a fugitive wanted on a huge fraud case.

Multiple identities to evade investigation

Time goes back to 2000. Sun, a man from Liaoning, fabricated supply channels and, after defrauding clothing worth 930,000 yuan, fled overnight. First, he returned to his hometown in Liaoning, changed his identity and made a living as a cook; during that period, he got to know his current wife. In 2006, he moved to Jiujiang with his wife, and from then on he switched to the pork business.

To evade the police’s pursuit and investigation, Sun carefully constructed multiple layers of identity barriers: over the course of 26 years, he used 3 different aliases. In his earlier years, he even obtained a fake electric welding certificate—replacing another person’s identity information with his own photo as cover—in an attempt to completely erase the traces of his past.

An old photo breaks the case in 12 hours

At 8:00 a.m. on March 31, while police officer Xu Shiqin from the Special Patrol Police Unit of the Jiujiang Municipal Public Security Bureau was conducting online analysis on the police big data platform, he found that a suspicious man bore a high resemblance to Sun, who had been on the run for 26 years. The police used intelligent matching to compare a blurry old photo of Sun that had been kept from 26 years ago with information in the database of illegal and criminal cases. Combined with offline on-the-ground visits and checks, as well as online trajectory tracking, they ultimately confirmed that the man was indeed Sun, the one who had been hiding while on the run for many years.

After locking down the information, officers of the Special Patrol Police Unit immediately went into action and captured Sun at a residential community in the suburbs. From the first discovery to the arrest, it was only 12 hours—ending Sun’s 26-year life as a fugitive. When facing the police, Sun let out a long sigh: “It’s been 26 years—finally, I don’t have to hide anymore.”

At present, Sun has been subject to criminal coercive measures in accordance with law, and the case is being handled further.
