Been diving into the metaverse app space lately and honestly, there's way more happening than I expected. Ever since the whole Meta rebrand thing, projects just keep launching with different approaches to virtual worlds.
So I've been testing some of the bigger metaverse apps out there. Axie Infinity was the one that actually grabbed attention back in 2021-2022 with the whole play-to-earn battle thing - you breed these NFT creatures and fight for rewards. Still has solid engagement. Then there's Decentraland where you can own virtual land parcels and do your own thing with them, which sounds chill if you're into building.
Roblox is interesting because it's not even blockchain-based, just a platform where creators make games and players can jump in. Hit over 200 million monthly users at its peak, and the free-to-play model actually works. The Sandbox is similar vibe but crypto-native - you build with voxels and sell your creations as NFTs.
Some of the newer metaverse app projects like RobotEra and Battle Infinity were doing presales with their own tokens, positioning themselves as the next big thing. MOBOX combines gaming with yield farming if you're into that angle. Zepeto from Naver Z got massive adoption in Asia for the avatar customization angle.
There's also Bloktopia designed like a 21-level skyscraper (Bitcoin reference, obviously), Mines of Dalarnia for the dungeon crawler crowd, and a bunch of others. The real question is which metaverse app actually delivers on the experience versus which ones are just riding the hype. Most have some form of mobile access now, which helps with adoption.
The space definitely evolved - less pure speculation, more actual gameplay and world-building happening. Worth exploring if you're curious about where virtual worlds are heading.
