I recently observed a phenomenon in the crypto world: many newcomers are trying a method called "撸毛" (literally "farming毛" or "毛 farming"). To be honest, at first, the name was a bit confusing, but after understanding it more deeply, I realized it’s essentially about participating in various activities and benefit mechanisms offered by project teams to acquire cryptocurrencies at minimal or zero cost. For newcomers, "撸毛" is often the first step into the blockchain ecosystem.
Why do project teams give out tokens voluntarily? Basically, it’s to attract users, generate buzz, and build traffic. They design various reward mechanisms, and savvy users take advantage of these to profit quickly and then withdraw. The most common "撸毛" method is airdrops, where the project directly distributes free tokens. You just need to complete simple tasks like registering, following social media accounts, or sharing content to claim them. Some dedicated task platforms aggregate activities from multiple projects, allowing users to participate in AMAs, fill out forms, or download apps in one place to earn tokens.
You can also "撸毛" on DeFi platforms by providing liquidity to earn token rewards. Some people jump in during the highest yield moments, make profits, and withdraw immediately. More aggressive "撸毛" players open multiple accounts to repeatedly farm the same project’s tokens—doubling their gains but also increasing risks, as projects often have anti-cheat mechanisms.
The appeal of "撸毛" is quite clear. First, cost is a big factor—most airdrops are completely free, requiring almost no investment. Second, it’s a good way to learn basic blockchain operations, like wallet usage and DeFi interactions, making it a valuable learning experience for beginners. Some tokens have immediate value upon listing and can be instantly cashed out, which adds to the attraction.
However, risks should not be ignored. The biggest issue is the difficulty in distinguishing genuine from fake projects. Many scam projects disguise themselves as legitimate airdrops, either tricking you into paying fees or outright being scams. "撸毛" tasks can be tedious and time-consuming, and you may not get the expected returns. During registration, you often need to provide email addresses and social media info, which poses privacy risks.
If you want to try "撸毛," here’s my advice. First, set up a digital wallet like MetaMask or TokenPocket, as many activities require wallet interaction. Then, join crypto info channels on Twitter, Telegram, or Discord to stay updated on opportunities. Beginners should start with reputable third-party task platforms like Galxe or Zealy, which aggregate tasks from well-known projects and are relatively reliable. Most importantly, don’t be greedy—avoid clicking on suspicious links, and stay away from "transfer for rebates" schemes. Also, if any project asks for your seed phrase or private key, that’s definitely a scam—never fall for it.
In the end, although "撸毛" might seem a bit shady, it’s actually a legitimate part of the crypto ecosystem. It serves as a marketing tool for projects and a way for newcomers to enter the space. As long as you stay vigilant, avoid greed, and keep learning, "撸毛" can be a good starting point for your accumulation in the crypto world.
