Having observed some people who have truly overcome depression, I found that they are not no longer sad, but that their prefrontal cortex has evolved. The process of climbing out of the abyss of depression is essentially an extremely brutal brain reshaping. After enduring it, their prefrontal cortex is often stronger than before depression. This strength is not about regaining happiness, but about truly mastering the ability to control pain. It's not about erasing sadness, but about rebuilding order.
